Customer project

Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden
Removal of cancer tumors is a complicated brain surgery operation. One critical and time consuming part of the operation is the milling process of the temporal bone. This research project focuses on developing a virtual reality-based system for educating surgeons to do these skull bone operations. The surgeon will get both visual and haptic feedback from the system. A 3D visual representation of the skull is implemented using the Marching cubes algorithm to manage data acquired from a CT-scan. Haptic forces due to the milling process will be modeled and implemented in the SenseGraphics H3D API, which is used to build up the virtual scene. A future goal of the project is to connect the VR-system with an already developed telerobotic system to control a real operation situation with the help of using VR interaction. More information...
