The Simodont Dental Trainer was the highlight at MOOG’s exhibition booth. This high fidelity simulator, with its haptics and 3D visual functionalities provided by SenseGraphics development team, allows future dentists to be trained in operative dental procedures under realistic dedicated virtual environment. The Simodont Dental Trainer was successfully developed in 2010, and 50 units are currently under operation in the Academic Centre for Dentistry (ACTA), Amsterdam.

Since our first collaboration in 2006, SenseGraphics is glad to share a pleasant and lasting relationship with MOOG. Today, we continue to work closely with the MOOG’s team of engineering experts in the medical simulation field in delivering high quality medical training solutions.

With the use of haptic technology, an ordinary wheelchair is given the ability to ’see or feel’ by a team of researchers at the Luleå University of Technology. This electric wheelchair is able to sense its surroundings and transmits information to a person who is visually impaired. This is achieved by the use of SenseGraphics H3DAPI platform, a haptic robot to serve as a virtual walking cane, 3D laser scanner, and a joystick for navigation. The 3D map created by the laser scanner is transmitted to the haptic platform, which creates the virtual touch environment and feeds this information back to its user via the haptic device.

Project HIPP (Haptics in Pedagogical Practice) by Lund University’s Certec, has developed a HIPP Drawing Program that enables users with visual impairments to draw digital images in an interactive tactile-audio environment. SenseGraphics H3DAPI comes into play by making it possible to use a haptic pen device to experience touch feedbacks as the user creates the images i.e. feeling the different depths of the lines drawn on the screen and receiving audio feedbacks as the user explores a map. Version 1.0 Beta of the HIPP Program is now available for free download, do check out HIPP main page for more details!

About SenseGraphics H3D API:

The development platform H3D offers the complete set of technologies needed to initiate high-performance hapto-visual 3D application development. For more information on how others are putting haptics and H3D into action, please visit SenseGraphics Hall of Fame.

January TED talks includes one very interesting speech from Professor Ynnerman, the founder of Norrköping Visualization and Interaction Studio (NVIS). The talk is about Professor Ynnermans’ famous research; using tranform functions to reduce the extremely large amounts of volymetric data from modern medical 3D data scans… then highlighting portions of the data allowing for the production of 3D graphics that are more or less like artistic paintings.

This way Professor Ynnerman and his team can, in just a couple of minutes, perform advanced biopsis on full body scans useful for crime investigations à la CSI…

Check out the amazing work yourself at the TED talk below!

And where does the SenseGraphics technology fit in here? Haptics is actually one of the research topics Ynnerman is working on. As a matter of fact, SenseGraphics has been commercializing the “Volumetric Haptics Toolkit” to H3DAPI, featured in the video (check 11 minutes, beating heart, there is also an older picture of a SenseGraphics Display featured), work done by researcher KJ Lundin Palmerius.

Meet SenseGraphics at MMVR18 in NewPort Beach for a world premiere of the Haystack Nerve Blocks training simulator and demonstration of the ScanTrainer Ultrasound simulator. There will also be demonstrations of the SenseGraphics H3DAPI developer platform with the SenseGraphics Display System for co-location of haptics and real 3D stereo graphics.

SenseGraphics is devoted to the science of multi-modal interaction and real 3D stereo visualization, with the vision to facilitate and support research- and commercial application development in the medical field.

Make your work fast with Open Source!
SenseGraphics flagship product H3DAPI sets the standard for multimodal research, medical and industrial application development in real 3D stereo graphics with haptics as available under both Open Source and commercial license. SenseGraphics’ latest invention, HAPI -haptic engine, is used for adding haptic interactions to graphical or other scientific applications, which makes it easier for these applications to be haptic-enabled with minimal rewriting of the existing code.

SenseGraphics is helping companies to develop and commercialize medical simulators. Successful customer reference work includes the Simodont Dental trainer from MOOG in the Netherlands, ScanTrainer Ultrasound training simulator from Medaphor in the UK, Stroke rehabilitation from Curictus in Sweden as well as the Haystack simulator for ultrasound guided peripheral nerve blocks from NDRC in Ireland.

Through the open source community, www.H3D.org, SenseGraphics has been able to quickly spread its software amongst researchers and gain broad, world-wide user support for H3DAPI by offering Wikis, tutorials and free support based forums.

SenseGraphics is also offering haptics hardware and 3D Display solutions for co-location of haptics and 3D stereo visualization.
