SenseGraphics at Miccai captured on Youtube

Our friends from Quanser captured SenseGraphics at the Miccai conference in a video and put it up on youtube recently.

Another interesting video from Miccai features the Inition (another SenseGraphics friend) company booth. Inition is specialised in all sorts of 3D visualisation gears. In the video below (after 1 minute) you will find a haptics Botox concept simulator that actually was put togteher using SenseGraphics H3DAPI and development services from our company.

SenseGraphics is currently at the MICCAI conference in London showing their newly developed SenseGraphics Display SGD3. This seams to be the first 120 HZ LCD based Immersive Workbench available on the market.

Think about adding dual haptics with gripping interface to this setup and voila you will have the perfect environment to develop a robotic medical simulator for your own Da Vinci robotics.

Simodont the Virtual Dental Simulator

The brand new Virtual Dental Simulator called Simodont,  from MOOG in the Netherlands, was presented to the public during the 35th annual meeting of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE).

SenseGraphics has been an important partner in developing the new Dental Simulator providing both software and consultancy work to MOOG. The Simodont is a unique product developed for the dental simulation market. The Simodont includes new haptics hardware that is co-located with real 3D stereo graphics allowing for real life training on virtual patients with hands-on drilling exercises and monitoring of dental mirror. 

ACTA, the dental educator in the Netherlands, has funded the development of the simulator and also ordered a number of installation.

SenseGraphics starts off this year by exhibiting at the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality conference in Los Angeles, 19 to 22 of January. The venue takes place at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach hotel and SenseGraphics will be there to show their latest advances in the field of medicine and virtual reality. Hopefully we will be able to show some of the new medical applications being developed using H3DAPI, more information will be available as we approach the conference.

For this conference we have also teamed up with MOOG to show their haptics as well as DepthQ StereoScopic to show their new HD real 3D stereo projector.

If you are present at the show make sure you join the workshop session of SenseGraphics CTO, Daniel Evestedt. The presentation will take place the 19th of January, Session C at 3.45: “H3DAPI: An Open Source API for Dexterous Skills Simulators”.

Ergonomical study of using the Novint Falcon

Today we joined a class session at the Royal Institute of Technology. It was the final day in a design course focusing on ergonomics.

In one of the project group the Novint Falcon game haptics device was chosen. The Falcon group had identified a problem when using the gaming device for longer gaming session. Already after some minutes of use the test group felt pain in their under arms and shoulders. Although there are recommendations in the manual like; for one hours of gaming you should rest 15 minutes, use the arm chair as a resting place for your arm while playing games… it is really limiting for a hard core gamers to restrict the “never want to end” playing games using this cool device.

Concepts for the Novint Falcon handle

The test users claim they feel pain in the under arm and shoulders on specific muscles. To really prove this is the case, the project group used EMG measurement to get an understanding for the kind of stress the muscles are exposed to. The group then did literature studies to find out what recommended arm and hand positions there are, in theory, for this or similar kind of use. From this study and the previous conclusions on the user test they brought up some new concepts on handles developed  and redesigned using the “JACK analysis” method (including force analysis). The group then manufactured new prototype handles which then was mounted on the Novint Falcon for new user test and EMG analysis. The final EMG analysis proved their new concepts being succesful in reducing the stress factor, especially on the under arm muscles.

UK Prime Minister a H3DAPI user?

UK Prime Minister recently opened up the International Digital Laboratory at the University of Warwick. The Digital Laboratory is an impressive new facility that will host world topp class academics with interest in digital technologies working on digital manufacturing and digital healthcare. During the opening ceremony, UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown used a demonstrational ‘virtual scissors’ to cut a ribbon in cyberspace. The demonstrator was actually built using H3DAPI and a SensAble Phantom Desktop haptic device.
